Finally, we've arrived

The rental car wasn't that big already, and Jeanne's rather broad shoulders didn't exactly help the situation either. We'll have to change spots for the road back.

We are the only car parked at the small parking lot, which hopefully means we are the only ones. The secluded onsen is still a 20 minute walk away from here, according to the navigation app.

"Do we have everything?"

"Food & drinks here", Benjamin replies as he grabs the backpack out of the car.
"Towels!" Tom holds up the bag of towels.
"Off we go!" Dave replies, holding the navigation app on his phone.

The destination is a secluded geothermal hot spring, used for bathing. While it would be a lot easier to go to a more well known onsen, most do not allow mixed bathing, meaning Jeanne would both have to be alone and deal with a bunch of weird looks.

A 20 minute walk and some snacks later, the friend group arrives at the onsen. As hoped, they are alone.

The hot spring is located in a small valley, hidden between two rocky hills, and surrounded by the now red and yellow leaves of the forest. The hot spring itself is a rather small pool of water, surrounded by a rocky path. Two small benches with buckets on top of them are set next to the pool. A sign providing information about the hot spring is near the entrance path to the general area, with a small building containing the changing rooms next to it.

Dave investigates the sign with information, as he is the best at Japanese of the group.

"Seems to be quite standard for the rules for these, use the wooden buckets to wash yourself before entering the hot spring, don't bring any soap or swimming clothing into the hot spring, and don't get your hair and rest of your head underwater."

While small, the building does provide separate changing rooms. Being the only girl in the group, this gives Jeanne some privacy. While the water inside the spring feels nice and warm to the touch, the autumn air is much colder.

After Jeanne is done changing, Tom has already made his way into the hot spring, and Benjamin is still busy cleaning himself. Dave, now wrapped in a towel and probably cold, is standing next to George at the information sign, talking about the geology of the area.

Jeanne grabs some water from the hot spring using one of the buckets, turns her back to the others, and quickly rinses herself. She quickly enters the water, making sure to not get the towel wet, or show too much of herself in the process.

Jeanne is surprised by how warm the water is. It almost feels like a hot tub, provided entirely by the molten rock underneath the surface of the earth. The temperature difference with the open air causes a slight mist to rise up from the water surface. It fogs up her glasses a bit.

The bottom of the hot spring is covered in some larger rocks, as well as gravel. While not painful, some of the smaller rocks do feel a bit sharp when standing on them. Near the edges of the hot spring pool are a number of larger square boulders for seating. Unfortunately for Jeanne, these were placed with the average Japanese person in mind, causing her wide shoulders to poke out of the water if she sits upright.

"I thought it would smell more like sulfur", George remarks, as he ties up his beard before entering the water.
"Oh I've been to one where it did", Dave mentions, after also getting in the water.
"I can taste other minerals in here tho" George replies.
"George you tiny man you're not supposed to DRINK the onsen water, who knows what the inoshishi did in here!" Dave replies
"I was curious!"
"George you sodding tic tac if you want to drink mineral water you can get it at one of the vending machines!".

The two find their own rock to sit on in the hot spring.

"Wish we could just sleep the jet lag away here", Benjamin remarks.
"I'd turn into an onsen tamago if I did that" Dave replies.
Jeanne gives a smug look at Dave.
"What!?"

After a moment of sitting in the hot water, listening to the wind gently blowing through the trees, Jeanne relaxes.

All of her stress and worries of the travel plans, running the restaurant, the previous jobs, previous events and other life decisions almost seem to dissolve in the water. With the sun now peaking through the overcast clouds, Jeanne starts to feel more at peace than she has in many years, maybe ever. She closes her eyes for a moment.

"I think you guys are going to have to drag me out of here when we have to go back to the hotel"
